Halfway antique sampler

Inmiddels ben ik al halverwege de reproductie van een antieke merklap zoals eerder geschreven.
Er volgens nog 4 alfabetten, en nog meer bloemen. De letters met de bloemen in het alfabet zijn vrij veel werk, want er zitten veel kleuren in. Dus vaak aan- en afhechten.

At the moment I am halfway the reproduction of an antique sampler, as mentioned before. There are 4 more alphabets to come and more flowers. The letters with the flowers in the alphabet are quite a lof of work, as there are a number of colors in it. So often you have to start and end a particular thread.

Hierna heb ik nog een Friese merklap liggen en een stoplap. Heel erg mooi maar ook veel werk.

After this I have another Friesian sampler and a darning sampler. Very nice, but also a lot of work.

Kleine update over onze hond!

Short update about our dog

De hond komt a.s. dinsdag aan op Schiphol. Omdat hij bij de organisatie de naam "Urbi" had gekregen, zochten wij naar een andere naam. En van "Urbi" kwamen we op de paus, "Popi" en uiteindelijk is het geworden "Pippo". Wij hopen dat hij zijn naam eer aan doet en een vrolijk beestje zal zijn. Ik houd jullie op de hoogte.

Our dog will arrive on Tuesday at Schiphol airport. The organisation gave him his name "urbi"we looked for another name. And from "Urbi" we came on the name of the Pope and in the end it became "Pippo". In Holland this is a name for a clown, so we hope he will be as chearful as a clown. I keep you informed.

Een nieuw begin - A new start

Het jaar 2011 is bijna voorbij en ik ben me al aan het voorbereiden op 2012!!
2012 zal het jaar worden van veranderingen, zowel in mijn persoonlijk leven als in mijn zakelijk leven.

The year 2011 is nearly over and I am already preparing for 2012. 2012 will be the year of changes, both in my personal life as well as in my business life.

Wat het zakelijk leven betreft zal ik daar eerst mee beginnen. Vanaf 1 januari 2012 zal ik geen ontwerpsters meer vertegenwoordigen of distribueren. Redenen daarvoor zijn talrijk, maar wie mijn blog de laatste tijd gelezen heeft, begrijpt dat mijn plezier toch wel grotendeels is verdwenen.

Let's start with my businesslife. As of January 1st, 2012 I will no longer distribute any designers. Reasons for that are numerous, but for those who have read my blog lately, they will understand that I don't have any joy any more in doing that.

Ik zal wel doorgaan met de distributie van garens, charms, scharen etc. En natuurlijk mijn eigen ontwerpen. Iets waar ik nu weer tijd voor krijg.

I will continue with distributing threads, charms, scissors etc. And of course my own designs. Something for which I will get some more time now.

Waar ik nu mee bezig ben is de reproductie van een antieke merklap uit 1859.

Het volgende nieuws is dat ik i.p.v. mijn man te helpen met zijn internetwinkel, am-inspirations, nu samen met hem de klantenservice in Nederland ga doen voor Casa Cenina uit Italie. Laatstgenoemde firma heeft de winkel van mijn man overgenomen en heeft meer dan 80.000 artikelen op voorraad. Een ontzettend leuke uitdaging.

The next news is that instead of helping my husband with his internetshop, am-inspirations, will do the customerservice in Holland for Casa Cenina from Italy. This last company has taken over the shop of my husband and has over 80.000 items in stock. This will be a great challenge.

En aangezien ik nog een aantal oude ontwerpen heb, nooit gepubliceerd, zal ik enkelen daarvan op mijn blog plaatsen als freebie/Sal.

And as I still have a number of old designs, never published, I will put some of those on my blog as a freebie/SAL

In ons persoonlijk leven zal ook iets veranderen. Wij krijgen namelijk binnenkort weer een hond. Mijn vorige hond, Abby, de bearded collie is dit jaar overleden. Nu krijgen we via adoptie een hondje uit Spanje. Een kruising van een Yorkshire Terrier.

In our personal life something will change as well. Soon we will get again a dog. My last dog, Abby the bearded collie died this year. Now through adoption we get a little dog out of Spain. A mix of a Yorkshire Terrier

We krijgen deze hond via de "ace-organisatie". Dit is een organisatie in Spanje die honden opvangt uit asiels etc. en ze naar Noord Europa brengt voor adoptie. Onze hond is uit een dodingsstation gehaald. Als je de verhalen hierover hoort, ben je ontzettend blij dat je kunt helpen. De honden die men niet meer wil, of die op straat leven worden naar deze dodingsstations gebracht, waar ze gedurende 10 dagen geen eten en drinken krijgen. Leven ze dan nog, dan worden ze gedood (en niet op de meest diervriendelijke manier).

We will get this dog through de "ace-organisation". This is an organisation in Spain who gets dogs out of shelters etc. and bring them to Northern Europe for adoption. Our dog has been saved from a killingstation. When you hear the stories about this,you are only happy you can help. Dogs, people don't want any more or who are living on the streets, are being brought to these killingstations, where they won't get any food or water. If they are still alive after 10 days they are killed (and not in the most animalfriendly way)

Terugblik op 1 jaar borduren Looking back to one year of stitching

Terugkijkend op 1 jaar borduren, ontdekte ik dat ik toch wel veel gemaakt heb.

Looking back to one year of stitching, I noticed I did make quite a lot this year.

In eerste instantie wat werk van andere designers, zoals bijv. Drawn Thread en Debbee's Designs.

At first some work from other designers, like Drawn Thread and DebBee's Designs.

Vooral die laatste "American Beauty" was heel leuk om te doen. Veel speciale steken, en werken met 3 draadjes. Volkomen in tegenstelling wat ik normaal doe.

Especially the last "American Beauty" was real fun to do. A lot of special stitches and working with 3 ply. Completely something different then what I am usually doing.

Hierna ging ik verder met het maken van enige eigen modellen.

After that I continued with making some models of my own

Ten eerste :To knot or not to knot" en "Hobby Time"

Deze waren al gedeeltelijk klaar toen wij op bezoek waren bij Attic Needlework in Mesa, Arizona

Hierna ben ik wat nieuws gaan maken, dit n.a.v. een vraag i.v.m. een workshop die ik zou geven in Italie.

After this I started with something new, this because I was asked to give a workshop in Italy



Kleine doosjes met als deksel een klein borduurwerkje. De eerste serie, want ja er kwamen er meer, was kleine Nederlandse merklap motieven. Met behulp van voorgesneden karton van Rinske Stevens Designs was het erg makkelijk te maken.
Zeker voor iemand die niet veel aan kartonnage heeft gedaan. :) Door dit voorgesneden karton ben je er zeker van dat alles de juiste maat heeft.

Little boxes with on the top a small stitched model. The first serie, yes more would follow, were Dutch mini samplers. With the help of the precut carton from Rinske Stevens Designs it was very easy to make. Especially for some who had not done a lot of cartonnage:) Thanks to this precut carton you can be sure that everything has the exact right size

Nog meer doosjes volgden, en ook nog een grotere.

More boxes followed, and also a larger one.




Voor diverse beurzen maakte ik ook nog naaldenboekjes. Deze met volledige beschrijving hoe ze in elkaar te zetten. Veel mensen weten wel hoe het moet, maar ik ben altijd verbaasd om te horen/zien dat men het niet weet. Vandaar dat Ton de patronen nu erg uitgebreid heeft gemaakt inclusief beschrijving en foto's.

For several shows I also made needlebooks. This time with complete description how to finish them. A lot of people already know this, but I am always surprised at hearing/seeing that people do not know it. That s why Ton made the charts very extensive including the description and pictures.

Zoals jullie zien veel modellen. En nu, nu ben ik bezig met het reproduceren van een schitterende antieke merklap uit 1859.
Volgende keer zal ik laten zien hoever ik al ben.

As you can see a lot of models. And now, now I am busy reproducing a very lovely antique sampler from 1959. Next time I will show you how far I am.

Niets nieuws - Nothing New

Na de afgelopen week op de Handwerkbeurs gestaan te hebben, volgde ik het onderstaande gesprek tussen 2 klanten en een verkoopster:

Last week at a show in Holland I heard the following conversation between 2 customers and one salesperson

Klant 1: Er is weer niets nieuws dit jaar
Verkoper: Jawel, er zijn nieuwe patronen van The Drawn Thread, o.a. een kerstkrans, een halloween patroon etc.
Klant 1: Maar het lijkt allemaal zoveel op wat we al gezien hebben. Het woord Halloween met verschillende zaken er om heen, dat heb ik al in het verleden gezien van o.a.Shepherds Bush, Marie Suarez etc.
Verkoper: Ja maar deze zijn echt anders
Klant 1: Dat patroontje is wel leuk, zo op de achterkant.Een leuk huisje, boom en een tekst
Klant 2: Maar die heb je ook al van Little House Needleworks
Klant 1: Kijk nou eens. Om dat voorbeeld te maken moet je "12" patronen kopen
Klant 2: Ze hebben zeker niet gehoord van de recessie. We hebben hier geen geld meer voor. Je kunt beter patronen downloaden van het internet,is het ook nog gratis.


Customer 1: There is nothing new this year
Salesperson: But there is, there are new charts from a.o. The Drawn Thread, a christmas wreath, halloween design a.s.o..
Customer 1:But they all look at what we have seen before. The word Halloween with different items around it, I have seen that in the past from Shepherds Bush, Marie Suarez a.s.o.
Salesperson: Yes but these are really different!!
Customer 1: That chart looks nice, that one on the back, a nice house a tree and a text
Customer 2: But you also have those charts from Little House Needleworks
Customer 1: Look at this!! You have to buy 12 charts to make this example.
Customer 2: They probably have not heard that we have a recession at the moment. We don't have money for this. It is better to download free charts from the internet.""


Al met al een hele trieste situatie. Want wie heeft nu het idee gekregen van bepaalde ontwerpen? En wie maakt nu eens echt iets origineels? Vaak komt het voor dat er een bepaalde trend is en dat meer dan 1 ontwerpster in die stijl of vorm iets gaat maken.Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de biscornu. Eerst waren ze er niet, nu heeft vrijwel elke ontwerpster wel een biscornu. Om nog maar niet te spreken over de verschillende Quaker patronen.

A very sad situation. Who started the idea of certain designs? And who makes something really original? Often there is a certain trend and more then one designer made something in this style or form. Think about biscornu's. At first there was not one, now nearly every designer has a biscornu. And I don't even want to talk about all the quaker designs.

Dit wil niet zeggen dat het originele idee exclusief is voor die ontwerpster die als eerste hiermee begon. En dat zij het alleenrecht heeft om dit te maken. De vraag is dan maar wie als eerste begon. Natuurlijk mogen hele patronen niet worden overgenomen, maar als anderen iets in een bepaalde stijl maken, mag dat natuurlijk wel. Zolang maar niet alles letterlijk wordt overgenomen.. Om dan anderen van diefstal te beschuldigen gaat in mijn ogen wel erg ver. Dit is helaas gebeurd en dat is wel heel triest. Dit zegt mij meer over de onzekerheid en de angst voor verlies in verkopen van die ontwerpster.

This does not mean that the original idea is exclusive for the designer who started this. And that she has the exclusivity to make this. (And besides it is the question who started first). Of course whole charts may not be copied, but as some people make something in a specific style, that is allowed. As long as not everything has been taken completely. To accuse someone from stealing is a bit too much. Unfortunately this has happened and that is very sad. It does say more about the insecurity and fear for loss of sales of that designer


Ook is het natuurlijk triest dat diverse winkels moeten sluiten,o.a. door het "gratis" op internet plaatsen van patronen. Ik bedoel daar niet mee de copyright infringement want dat is op zich wel diefstal, maar de vele SAL's. Gratis patronen voor iedereen die maar mee doet.

Also it is very sad that several shops have to close, a.o. by all the "free" charts on the internet. I don't mean by that the copyright infringement, because that is clearly robbery, but I mean all the "SAL'S. Free charts for everyone who is willing to join , think about the Romantique Sampler SAL.

Jullie begrijpen dat ik mijn plezier weer aardig ben kwijtgeraakt. Hopelijk komt het toch nog in orde de komende tijd.

You will all understand that I am loosing my fun again. Let's hope it will return the next couple of weeks

EINDELIJK - AT LAST

Eigenlijk moet ik me diep schamen, ik heb al bijna een jaar niet meer geblogged. Er zijn natuurlijk redenen voor maar daar zal ik niet te veel op in gaan. Na vorig jaar verloor ik enigszins het plezier in deze hobby (en dan vooral in de hobby branche).
Actually I should be very ashamed, as I have not blogged for nearly one year. Of course there are reasons for this, but I won't go into too much details. Last year I lost nearly all my pleasure in this hobby (and especiallly in the creative branche)


Waardoor verlies je het plezier in je hobby/werk?
Wel is het zo dat je plezier in wat je doet vaak toch minder wordt als de mensen met wie je omgaat zich heel anders gaan gedragen dan voorheen. Afspraken worden niet nagekomen, en vaak krijg je onterechte verwijten etc.
Natuurlijk speelt ook voor velen de economische recessie een rol. Er zijn nu eenmaal ontwerpers die moeten leven van hun werk en dat wordt wel moeilijker.

Why do you loose your pleasure in your hobby/work? Quite often the pleasure you have will be less, when people you work with are behaving different then in the past. Commitments are not followed up, and often you get very unfriendly reproaches.
Of course at the moment the current economic recession also plays a role. There are designers who have to live from their work and that is getting more and more difficult.

Het internet heeft natuurlijk zijn voordelen. Mensen die je vroeger niet kenden als ontwerpster, kennen je nu wel. En je kunt over de hele wereld patronen kopen.
Het internet heeft ook zijn nadelen. Er wordt erg veel illegaal gekopieerd en op het internet gezet. De strijd hiertegen is door een aantal ontwerpsters gezamenlijk opgepakt. We proberen degenen die illegaal bezig zijn te wijzen op de gevolgen voor de hele creatieve branche. Veel ontwerpsters kunnen niet meer rondkomen en zijn gedwongen ander werk te zoeken of helemaal te stoppen met ontwerpen. Ook zijn er een groot aantal winkeliers gestopt omdat ze niet meer verkochten, want de mensen hadden de patronen al illegaal gedownload. Zo wordt dus door internet ook een hele business kapot gemaakt.

The internet has naturally also his advantages. People who did not know you as a designer, do know you now. And it is possible to buy charts all over the world. Internet has also its disadvantages. There are a lot of copyright infringements on the internet. The battle agains this has been picked up by a number of designers and also by the TNNA. We try to point out the consequences for the whole creative branch to those who upload illegal copies, A number of designers can't manage anymore and are forced to find another job besides designing or quit at all with designing. Also a number of shopowners had to stop with their business, as they were not able to sell those charts which are illegally downloaded from the internet. This way a whole industry has been spoiled by the internet.


Gelukkig zijn er ook positieve zaken te melden. Afgelopen mei was ik in de USA en bezocht daar een geweldige winkel: Attic Needleworks in Mesa Arizona. Ook een beurs in Duitsland, Osnabruck, was heel positief. Een ander positief feit was dat we uitgenodigd waren in Italie om bij Casa Cenina een workshop te geven.

Fortunately there are also some positive issues. Last May I was in the USA on holiday and visited Attic Needleworks in Mesa Arizona. Also a show in Germany, Osnabruck was very positive. And another positive fact was that we were invited to give a workshop in Italy by Casa Cenina


De laatste positieve punten hebben toch weer enigszins mijn plezier terug laten komen. Wel zal er e.e.a. veranderen volgend jaar, wil ik het plezier niet weer verliezen. Ik richt me nu weer op dat wat me plezier geeft het ontwerpen, zoals o.a. van doosjes. Verder ben ik bezig met het reproduceren van een antieke merklap uit 1859. Ontzettend leuk om te doen!!! En ik zal meer gaan bloggen. Dus wordt vervolgd........

These last positive facts have given me back at least some of my pleasure. I do know that next year a few things will have to change, if I don't want to loose my pleasure in what I am doing. At the moment I do what gives me the most fun, being designing, a.o. from boxes with sampler motifs. And I am busy reproducing an antique sampler from 1859, which is an enormous lot of fun to do. And I will blog more. So to be continued......

Finally.....

Eindelijk na een lange tijd weer eens een update van mijn blog. Het zijn drukke maanden geweest de laatste 3 maanden, met veel beurzen, veel werk, maar ook tijd voor ontspanning.

Finally after a long period an update from my blog. It has been very busy months, with lots of shows, lot of work, but also time for relaxation.


Shows zijn altijd leuk om te doen, maar ook vermoeiend. Het leuke is vaak de contacten met borduursters, leren waar ze mee bezig zijn, en zien wat de mensen leuk vinden. Ook leuk de gesprekken met andere standhouders. Jammer alleen dat er zoveel haat en nijd is en men onderling elkaar niets gunt. Maar dat komt blijkbaar niet alleen bij borduren voor, maar ook bij andere hobby artikelen. Mijn leukste beurs was een beurs in Italie, waar we op verzoek van Casa Cenina waren om het publiek de handgeverfde zijden garens te tonen en te leren om hier mee te werken. Alle mensen van Casa Cenina voelen aan als een grote familie en is heel erg gezellig. Op zo'n beurs doe je ook leuke contacten op met andere ontwerpsters. Natuurlijk hadden we al veel contact met Marie Suarez, maar op deze beurs hebben we ook Isabella van The Primitive Hare leren kennen, maar daarover later meer.

Shows are always fun to do, but also very tiring. The fun part is often the contacts with the stitchers, learning what they are doing and seeing what people like most. Also fun are the contacts with the other exhibitors. It is only a pity that there is so much envy and jealousy, and people don't like you to succeed. But that is not only something which happens only with stitching, but in the whole hobby branche. My favourite show this past year was a show in Italy, where we have been on request from Casa Cenina to show all the hand dyed threads and silks and learn people how to work with it. Everyone from Casa Cenina feel like one BIG family and are a lot of fun to be with. On such a show you always meet a lot of people and get to know other designers. Of course we already have a lot of contact with Marie Suarez, but at this show in Italy we also met Isabella from The Primitive Hare, but more about that later.





Tijdens deze show werd een boekje uitgebracht met ontwerpen van 9 verschillende ontwerpsters. Het thema van dit boekje is Tuscan Memories. Ook ik was gevraagd om een ontwerp en hier kunnen jullie dan 1 deel zien:

During this show a new booklet was released with designs from 9 different designers. The theme of this booklet is Tuscan Memories. I was also asked to make a design and here you can see the first part of it.


Zoals ik al schreef hebben we op deze beurs ook Isabella ontmoet van de Primitive Hare. Ze heeft prachtige houten accessoires zoals diverse thread keepers maar ook een horn book. Ik kon het niet laten om ook hiervoor een ontwerp te maken.

As mentioned before we have met on the show in Italy also Isabella from the Primitive Hare.She has lovely wooden accessories like different kind of threadkeepers but also a horn book. I could not resist making a chart for this as well.


En nu, is het al weer bijna het einde van dit jaar. Een jaar waarin veel gebeurd is met leuke en minder leuke zaken.
Het heeft hier al weer behoorlijk gesneeuwd en is ook vooral de laatste dagen erg koud geweest.

De plannen voor volgend jaar staan ook al weer grotendeels vast. Alleen niet zoveel beurzen als dit najaar, maar 1 per maand maximaal. Daarnaast hoop ik meer tijd te krijgen voor het ontwerpen en borduren. Ik heb nog 2 opdrachten liggen, en daarna hoop ik nog veel meer te maken. En misschien wel tijd te krijgen om speciale freebies te maken voor deze blog.

And now it is nearly the end of the year. A year during which a lot has happened, bot good but also some bad things.
At the moment it has snown here a lot and especially the last couple of days it has been very cold.

Our plans for the next year have already been decided upon. Not als many shows like this autumn, but only 1 x per month. Besides that I hope to get more time available for the designing and stitching. I still have to make 2 designs for commitments and after that.... who knows. Perhaps i will even have some free time to make some freebies for this blog.
